Dhaka's rail communication with Chittagong was snapped for six hours as a bogie of a train derailed after a pickup van collided with a train in Comilla early Sunday.
The accident took place at Padua Bazar level crossing in Comilla at around 2:30am Sunday.
Ismail Hossain Siraji, in-charge of Comilla Railway police camp, said a bogie of the Chittagong-bound train veered off the tracks at around 2:30am after a collision with a pickup van, laden with vegetables, while it was passing the level crossing.
However, no causality was reported.
Confirming the matter, Liaquat Ali Majumder, senior assistant engineer (roads) of Comilla Railway said: “Higher officials are coming to inspect the spot. Necessary steps will be taken to investigate the incident,”
The rest of the bogies was sent to Comilla Railway Station and Laksham Junction, he said.
A relief train from Laksham junction rushed to the spot and conducted a rescue operation.
A number of trains have been stranded at different stations following the incident.
Meanwhile, the railway authorities have formed a four-member probe body, headed by Snehashish Das Gupta, transport officer of Chittagong East Railway Division, to look into the incident.
The committee has been asked to submit its report by Sunday.
