A woman in Faridpur died after giving birth to a baby at a clinic as its owner posing as a surgeon performed the C-section on her.

Mamnur Rashid, 36, the owner of Padma Hospital and Diagnostic Centre in the district’s Bhanga upazila, operated on 20-year-old Taslima Begum on Monday.

Taslima was taken to the operation theatre under the hospital’s Resident Doctor Tamanna Ashraf on Monday evening where Rashid operated on her.

She suffered heavy blood loss after delivering a girl. She was then referred to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, where she died around 3am.

The clinic, which Rashid was running without a license, is located just beside the upazila health complex. He had served a six-month sentence over a similar incident last year.

The Dhaka Tribune correspondent, verifying the medical documents, found that the clinic’s gynaecologist Dr Yasmin Akter was listed as the victim’s doctor.

Dr Yasmin said she had not performed the surgery. “I was at Faridpur Shishu Hospital at the time of the incident.”

Rashid was unavailable despite several attempts made by the correspondent to contact him.

According to the documents, on October 30 last year, a Rapid Action Battalion team led by Executive Magistrate Mohammad Al Amin arrested Rashid over allegations of performing an unauthorized appendicitis surgery on a patient.

He was sentenced to six months in jail and his clinic was sealed. However, he reopened it again.

Bhanga Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Md Mohsinuddin Fakir said that he had heard about the matter but received no written complaint.

He added that the clinic had been running illegally and they had applied for registration in 2020.
