An allegedly abducted man has been found alive after seven years in Karnapur village of Bogra Sadar upazila.

Md Shamim, 26, went missing in January 2015. Later, a shopkeeper named Md Azizar Rahman, 31, was charged with Shamim’s abduction and served four and a half months in jail.

On Monday, Shamim was seen cycling in Karnapur village where Azizar lives.

Azizar’s family attempted to detain Shamim for faking his abduction but he managed to flee to Bogra Sadar police station and complained of a counter-attack.

Police could not take any action against Shamim as there was no complaint filed against him, said the station’s Inspector Abul Kalam Azad.

Azizar said Shamim owed him Tk1 lakh, a bicycle, and a mobile phone worth Tk26,000. On January 2, 2015, when Shamim was asked to return these, his mother Swarna Begum filed a missing person case at Sadar police station.

According to local sources, Shamim fled to India on the advice of his mother.

Azizar claimed that the police forced him to give a confessional statement in court after being remanded for six days in two phases. "I have visible signs of police torture on my body,” he added.

After the torture became unbearable for him, he confessed to the crime.

On September 12, 2016, a charge sheet was filed against him in court. He was jailed and released on bail at a cost of Tk2.5 lakhs by a higher court.
