Covid-19: Barisal sees 17 deaths and 669 cases in 24 hours

The virus has so far claimed 563 lives in the southern division

The Barisal division has recorded 17 more coronavirus-related deaths in the 24 hours to Tuesday morning.

Of them, 10 tested positive for the deadly virus and  the others had symptoms.

During the same period, as many as 669 new Covid-19 cases were detected at the six districts of the division, taking the total number of cases to 39,353.

With the latest development, the total death toll in the southern division now stands at 563. 

On the other hand, a total of 21,556 people have recovered from disease since the pandemic broke out in March last year.

Dr Basudeb Kumar Das, the divisional health director, said of the five latest deceased, five were from Barisal, three from Bhola, and one each from Patuakhali and Piojpur districts.

He said seven of the deceased, who were showing symptoms of Covid-19, had passed away at the isolation ward of Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH).

SBMCH sources said 891 patients with symptoms have so far died in the hospital’s isolation ward and 341 confirmed patients in the corona ward.

The hospital tested 188 samples for a positivity rate of 36.17% in the past 24 hours.

Currently, the hospital is treating 215 people in both wards.
