Suspect snatched away from police in Cox’s Bazar attack

One arrested over attack on law enforcers; manhunt launched for fugitive suspect

Locals in Cox’s Bazar have attacked a police team to free a suspect named in several cases involving narcotics and illegal firearms.

A group of people, armed with local weapons, attacked and snatched away Habibur Rahman Habib alias Magu from the police on Wednesday in Teknaf upazila, said local police OC Md Hafizur Rahman.

As Habib was being taken away following his arrest, 10 to 15 people led by local UP member Maulvi Syedul Islam attacked with iron rods and sharp weapons, said OC Rahman.

“The UP member has been arrested and a manhunt has been launched for Habib,” said the Teknaf police chief before adding they will bring charges of assaulting law enforcers against 10 to 15 people.

Sub Inspector Mohiuddin, and constables Rafiqul Islam Rafi and Nazir Hossain have been hospitalized for the injuries, he added.

Habib is named in six cases, which includes charges like narcotics and illegal firearms, according to the police.
