Update : 03 Aug 2021, 11:31 PM

Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) of Koyra Station in Khulna have arrested a deer poacher with 9.9kg of venison.

Al Amin Hossain, 21, son of Musa Dhali, a resident of Shyamnagar upazila in Satkhira district, was arrested on Monday night, Lieutenant Commander of Bangladesh Navy Amirul Haque said on Tuesday.

A BCG team led a drive in Ghorilal area of the upazila at about 8:45pm and arrested Al Amin with 9.9kg venison wrapped in a bag from his possession.

Deer poaching in the Sundarbans has increased at an alarming rate as poachers have become desperate, bringing a new threat to this vegetarian animal.

In the last two weeks of January this year, the Forest Department and BCG members in separate drives arrested 10 poachers and recovered 78kg venison, 10 deerskin and one dead deer.

In 2020, the forest authorities seized 200kg venison, held 40 poachers and rescued 22 deer alive from different traps.

According to sources, a tiny fraction of poachers are tracked down while the majority of them escape any obstruction successfully and locals have alleged that poachers are doing business by managing a section of staff both at the Forest Department and the local administration.
