Hundreds of vehicles and commuters became stuck for hours in a 15-kilometre long tailback on the Dhaka-Tangail- Bangabandhu Bridge on Monday amid the Eid rush.
Starting from the Bangabandhu bridge’s eastern end, the tailback reached Rabna bypass on the highway near the Tangail district town.
The Dhaka-bound lane of the highway was clear but hundreds of vehicles were stranded at the opposite lane.
Hundreds of thousands of people are leaving the capital over the last few days to celebrate the Eid-ul-Azha with family and friends after the coronavirus shutdown was lifted for nine days.
Police said traffic on the highway is three times more than the usual.
Tangail’s Superintendent of Police Sanjit Kumar Roy said that over 60 policemen were deployed on the highway in the district while another 200 law-enforces have been deployed on other parts of the highway.
