Narayanganj factory fire death toll likely to rise, says citizens’ probe body

CID takes charge of the investigations

Update : 17 Jul 2021, 05:17 PM

More human remains were discovered on the third floor of the burnt Hashem Foods Ltd factory building in Narayanganj’s Rupganj, according to one of the probe bodies formed to investigate the incident.

The 19-member citizen's committee pressed doubts about the death toll during a spot visit on Saturday.

Professor Anu Muhammad, head of the investigation team, said: "The presence of more burned human remains on the third floor of the building is an indication that the death toll is actually higher than what has been shown."

Meanwhile, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Saturday took charge of the investigation of the murder case filed over the deaths of 52 people in the massive fire.

CID Additional Deputy Inspector General Imam Hossain (Dhaka Division) confirmed the matter after visiting the spot on Saturday afternoon.

A four-member investigation team including the case investigating officer Inspector Md Ataur, CID’s Narayanganj office, has been formed to probe the case.

On July 8, at least 49 workers -- trapped on the third floor with its only exit locked -- died when the massive fire engulfed the factory. Three others succumbed to injuries they sustained after jumping off the six-storey building. Over 50 others were injured in the incident that shook the world.

Eight people, including the owner of Sajeeb Group and his sons, were arrested and remanded in a case filed over the fire incident.
