Nikhil Kumar Chakma, former chairman of the Rangamati Hill Tracts District Council, has been elected as the chairman of Chittagong Hill Tracts Development Board (CHTDB).
The appointment was confirmed in a circular signed by Oliur Rahman, deputy secretary (contract and foreign employment) of the Ministry of Public Administration, on Tuesday afternoon.
Nikhil Kumar Chakma, also the vice president of the Rangamati district unit Awami League, is the first civilian to be appointed as the chief of the CHTDB. He will remain in office for a period of two years.
Previously, members of parliament, GOC of the army’s Chittagong Region and Chittagong divisional commissioners were appointed as the chairman.
Former secretary Naba Bikram Kishore Tripura ended his term on March 17 after serving as the CHTDB chairman for the last two terms.
