A couple and their infant grandson have been killed and 13 others injured after a bus collided with a CNG-run auto-rickshaw head-on in Bogra’s Shibganj upazila.

The incident took place in the upazila’s Hatibandha area on the Dhaka-Rangpur Highway around 8am on Saturday, according to witnesses and first responders.

The three deceased were identified as Ashraf Ali, 50, his wife Parul Begum, 42, and their two-month-old grandson Rezwan Islam. All of them were passengers of the auto-rickshaw.

The accident had caused severe gridlock in the area until the damaged vehicles were moved from the road.

Officials said Ashraf and Parul were killed on the spot when the Panchagarh-bound bus collided head-on with the auto-rickshaw.

Apart from Rezwan, the auto-rickshaw driver and another passenger, a number of bus passengers were also injured after the vehicle fell on its side.

All the injured were taken to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital and other local hospitals for treatment. The child died on the way.

Gobindaganj highway police OC Khairul Islam said they impounded the bus right after the incident, but the driver and his assistant had managed to escape.

“The bodies of the deceased have been handed over to their families. A case will be filed in this regard soon,” he added.
