Police arrested a teenager for on charges of raping a seven-year-old girl in Chittagong on Wednesday.
The 16-year-old accused was arrested from Daulatpur village of Karnaphuli upazila, Chittagong. The incident of rape happened at Rafiq Colony in the village on Tuesday evening.
The girl was home alone when the perpetrator, her next-door neighbour, entered the house and raped her, according to the locals’ accounts.
As the child informed her mother of the incident, she informed others in the neighbourhood, who apprehended the accused and then handed him over to police on Wednesday afternoon.
Karnaphuli police station OC Mohammad Dulal Mahmud said the child had been sent to the one-stop centre of Chittagong Medical College Hospital for medical examination.
The arrested is being interrogated, the OC added.
