Update : 09 Jun 2021, 04:09 PM

Poriborton Kori Foundation has taken the initiative to repair and rebuild homes of people affected by the recent Cyclone Yaas in Dhalchar union under Char Fasson upazila of Bhola.

With its volunteer team of 15 Dhaka University students, the foundation distributed fresh groceries and other aids, including saline, water purification tablets, reusable sanitary napkins and dry food, among the affected on May 30, said a press release issued on Wednesday.

Cyclone Yaas hit the coastal areas of Bangladesh on May 26, which affected the lives of thousands of residents of Dhalchar union.

The team, led by Tanvir Hasan Shaikat, is now working to repair and rebuild homes by carrying sand and clay to raised lands and repurposing tin sheds and buying new materials, added the press release.

They are also mobilizing the locals to help with the rebuilding of their community.

Tanvir Hasan Shaikat has been previously recognized as a Real Hero of the United Nations in 2020 for his voluntary work during the pandemic.

Poriborton Kori also collaborated with Uttaran Foundation to raise funds for the affected people of Koyra of Khulna and Shyamnagar and Asashuni upazila of Satkhira, where Uttaran volunteers are currently working, the release said.

“As a climate vulnerable country, emergency response to disasters is a huge challenge. We must not solely depend on the government and foreign-funded NGOs in such cases; rather we should proactively look at how we can utilize local resources effectively and look to build climate-resilient coastal communities," Poriborton Kori Foundation founder Ahsan Habib Bhuiyan said.
