In a harrowing turn of events, a businessman has been charred to death allegedly by his partner over Tk20 lakh at Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka city—something the accused has admitted to.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police arrested four people, including the main accused Nurun Nabi alias Roni, reports Bangla Tribune. The remaining arrestees are Md Hasan Ahmed and Jahid Hossain and Ranju.

CID Special Superintendent of Police Mukta Dhar, speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, said the victim, Ahsan Habib, died at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery on May 8 as an unidentified person.

He was recovered critically burnt from a home at Harinhati area of Kaliakair upazila in Gazipur just a day earlier.

“Habib had been missing for four days after coming out of his home to recover Tk20 lakh Roni owed to him. He was found on the ground floor of a building in Harinhati and then rushed to the Dhaka hospital,” Mukta said.

Later on, his family members identified his body at the morgue of Dhaka Medical College Hospital and a case was filed over the murder.

The CID arrested Roni from Kaliakoir upazila on Monday night. Roni had a feud with Habib centering on their joint business.

“Roni owed Tk20 lakh to him. As Habib tried to recover the money, Roni and his three associates first hit him with a hammer and then set him afire,” the police official said, adding that the prime accused had also admitted to the crime in primary interrogation.

Interestingly, through a fake identity, Roni on June 1 rented the room where Habib was burnt, which had been padlocked since then, except when the crime was committed.

“As planned earlier, Roni entered the room, at a time convenient to him, along with Habib and fled from it soon after setting the latter on fire.” Mukta said.
