A 10th grader has succumbed to the injuries he sustained allegedly in a teen gang attack more than three weeks ago in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka city.

Joy Halder,18, son of Jana Halder of Rajashon Pool Market area and a student of Saint Joseph School and College, breathed his last at Enam Medical College Hospital on Sunday afternoon, police confirmed.

The gang leader, Sawdagar, and his associates beat up and seriously injured Joy on the night of May 16, Savar Model police station Sub-Inspector Sadruzzaman said.

“They hit him with iron rods, pipes and locally made weapons. As locals came to his rescue, the gang members threatened them too.

“Joy’s brother finally appeared at the scene and rescued him, taking him to the hospital, where he died 23 days later,” Sadruzzaman added.

Sources said Joy was not a member of any gang. The reason for the attack on him has yet to be confirmed.

A case was filed in this regard the same night, accusing Sawdagar and eight others. Three of them were immediately arrested, but they were later freed on bail.

“We are conducting raids to arrest the rest of the accused,” the sub-inspector said.

Teen gang culture, as it is termed by experts and criminologists, has become a matter of concern as it revolves around groups of teenagers across the country often found to be involved in criminal activities, including murder.
