A crisis of beds at the Covid-19 dedicated hospital in Khulna is deepening as Covid-19 cases keep piling up in the border division.
A total of 113 patients were admitted to the hospital on Saturday. But the hospital has only a 100-bed capacity.
There were 110 patients on Friday, 115 patients on Thursday, 109 on Wednesday, and 99 on Tuesday.
Currently, the hospital has 20 ICU beds, 10 HDU beds, and 70 more beds in the red and yellow zones.
Due to the increasing number of patients, the hospital authorities are now planning to launch a second unit for Covid patients at the hospital.
Meanwhile, four patients succumbed to the viral infection at the hospital on Saturday.
On Friday, two patients died within a span of 40 minutes in the evening. Later at night, two more patients died within 20 minutes in the hospital.
The daily infection rate is also on the rise. On Saturday, the infection rate was 17.37% at the testing facility of Khulna Medical College Hospital.
Dr Md Mehedi Newaz, vice-chancellor of Khulna Medical College, said altogether 49 people tested positive out of 282 samples tested on Saturday. Of them, 39 were from Khulna. Of the remaining 10, nine were from Bagerhat and one from Barisal.
Khulna Divisional Health Director Dr Rasheda Sultana said 35,742 people had tested Covid positive in 10 districts of the division till Saturday while 666 people died from the infection.
