7 shot during clash in Madaripur

Police arrested four men including the area’s former chairman in connection to the incident

Seven people sustained gunshot wounds during a clash between two groups over establishing supremacy in Madaripur’s Shibchar upazila.

The clash took place in Saheb Bazar area under Kutubpur union of the upazila around 8pm on Saturday.

All of the injured were rushed to Shibchar Health Complex. The condition of two of them were critical and was later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for advanced treatment, said the hospital’s on-duty doctor Emdadul Haque Russell.

Witnesses said Atiq Madbar, the current chairman of Kutubpur union, was at loggerheads with Monwar Bepari, the former chairman of the same area, over ensuring their dominance. The conflict started over this.

Later, the supporters of both these men got involved in a clash. They initially used domestic weapons but then the firing started. In addition to those who were shot, 13 others were injured in the clash, the witnesses added.

However, Atiq Madbar and Monwar Bepari could not be reached for comment.

Shibchar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Miraj Hossain said: “We had to fire rubber bullets and blank shots to bring the situation under control. Additional police have been deployed in the area now.”

Later, four men including Monwar were arrested in connection with the incident, he added.
