Man arrested for torturing elderly couple in Comilla

A video of the incident went viral on social media, torture centred on land dispute

Police have arrested a man for attacking and torturing an elderly couple in Comilla’s Debidwar upazila.

Kamrul Hasan, 30, was arrested in a drive in Debidwar’s Vani area early Monday. A Comilla court sent him to jail later in the afternoon, confirmed Debidwar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Arifur Rahman.

Md Habibur Rahman, 70, and his wife Asma Begum, 60, were tortured in their own home in Katkasar village under Vani union of Debidwar on Saturday night.

Witnesses rescued them and took them to Debidwar Upazila Health Complex. Asma was transferred to Comilla Medical College Hospital after initial treatment.

Taslima Begum, son-in-law of the victims, filed a case against five people with Debidwar police station on Sunday night. The other accused in the case are Md Faruk Hossain, 40, his wife Parveen Begum, 30, mother Khorsheda Begum and Kamrul's wife Shilpi Begum, 25. 

On Monday afternoon, a video of the elderly couple being tortured went viral on social media, leading to widespread public outcry.

While undergoing treatment at the hospital, Habibur Rahman said: “Kamrul, Faruk and his wife Parveen came to forcibly place a bamboo fence in front of my house, so that we would be unable to leave. When my wife and I tried to stop them, Faruq hacked my wife while Kamrul and Parveen beat us with bamboo. I want exemplary punishment for this torture.”

OC Md Arifur Rahman said “The couple were tortured over a land dispute. We arrested one of the accused within six hours of the case being filed. Operations are underway to arrest the other accused.”
