Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Sunday detained a local Union Parishad (UP) member with three gold bars, worth Tk57.16 lakh, in Chuadanga.

Israfil Hossain Puku, 46, was caught with the bars from a playground in Goyeshpur village under the district’s Jibannagar upazila around 5pm Sunday, according to BGB officials.

The seized gold bars weigh 1.63kg.

Confirming the matter, Lt Col Kamrul Ahsan, the commanding officer of BGB’s Maheshpur-based 58th battalion, said Israfil was a member of Ward No 1 under the upazila’s Shimanto UP.

In a media statement issued earlier in the day, BGB said that a team from the 58th battalion, acting on a tip-off conducted a drive in the area on Sunday afternoon and arrested Israfil along with the gold bars and a motorcycle.

It also claimed Israfil was trying to smuggle the gold bars across the border into India.

BGB later at night handed him over to Jivannagar police. A case was also filed against him.
