A Bangladeshi man has been detained by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) at the Rowmari border in Kurigram.
BSF arrested Rashedul Islam, 26, a construction worker, of Chatokaraibari village in Ward 3 of the Datbhanga union.
Company Commander of BGB 35 Battalion Daatbhanga Camp Captain Mizanur Rahman and Datbhanga Union Parishad Chairman Rezaul Karim confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
Rashed was arrested on Friday at around 6pm near the main international pillar 1056 at the Chatokaraibari border in the Daatbhanga union of Rowmari upazila.
According to sources, several Bangladeshis, including Rashedul Islam, entered India through the border on Friday afternoon to smuggle goods. Later in the evening, on their way back to Bangladesh, they were chased by members of the Indian 8 Gutalu BSF camp. While the others were able to escape, Rashedul was captured by the BSF members.
Citing Rashed's family, UP Chairman Rezaul Karim said: "Rashedul and others were detained by the BSF while visiting a corn field at the border."
The chairman further claimed: “The arrested youth has been detained inside India along with his accomplice. They mainly go to the border to smuggle cattle or other Indian goods.”
BGB 35 Company Commander Captain Mizanur Rahman said: "We contacted the BSF camp after we received the news. They have confirmed the news of the arrest. The BSF said further legal action would be taken against him,” he added.
