A 19-year-old has been sent to jail for allegedly uploading and spreading a morphed photo of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina along with a vulgar caption in Barisal.

The accused is Mahbub Alam, son of Malek Fakir from the Ichhagura area under Char Monai union in the Sadar upazila.

Barisal Metropolitan Magistrate Shamim Ahmed passed the order against Mahbub after rejecting his bail plea on Saturday, said Court Inspector Khokon Chandra Dey.

Court sources said the accused uploaded the distorted photo of the premier along with an objectionable caption on his Facebook account on April 19.

The photo went viral immediately, causing a massive uproar in the area. Subsequently, some local Awami League and Chhatra League leaders and activists caught him after Jumma prayers on Friday and then handed him over to police.

Kotwali police station Sub-Inspector Md Asad said they took Mahbub into custody after locals turned him over for insulting the prime minister.

Nurul Islam, officer-in-charge of the police station, said Mahbub was sent to jail after a case was filed over the matter.
