Update : 12 Apr 2021, 04:43 PM

Despite the suspension of intercity public transport services during the seven-day countrywide lockdown, commuters have been experiencing heavy traffic on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway since early Sunday morning.

There have been reports of heavy traffic in Madanpur, Kachpur, Chittagong road and Signboard areas of the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in Narayanganj.

Meanwhile, the 3km-stretch of the highway from Gouripur bus stand to Shahidnagar in Daudkandi of Comilla also experienced slow vehicular movement since 4am.

Kanchpur Highway police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Moniruzzaman told Dhaka Tribune that the number of vehicles started increasing after 9am in Madanpur, Kanchpur, Chittagong road and Signboard road. “Most of the vehicles are goods-laden trucks and personal transports.”

He also said that people were leaving Dhaka amid the seven-day “relaxed” lockdown upon the declaration of the “strict” lockdown to be enforced from April 14.

“Similarly, the commercial carriers are also taking pre-lockdown preparations,” he added.

Meanwhile, Daudkandi Highway police station Sub-Inspector Alimul Al Raji identified the excessive number of vehicles and sporadic road accident incidents to be the main reasons behind the heavy traffic.

“The traffic authority is working in order to reduce traffic on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway,” he added
