4 more BNP men arrested over Hefazat violence in Narayanganj

Police have arrested four men, including former and incumbent leaders and activists of the BNP, in a case filed over the violence during Hefazat’s hartal in Narayanganj.

Police conducted a drive in Shiddhirganj and arrested them in the early hours of Friday, confirmed Mashiur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shiddhirganj police station.

The arrested are Mofazzal Hossain, 39, former vice-president of Shiddhirganj Thana unit Chhatra Dal, Mamun Miya, 39, BNP’s member of ward 2 under Narayanganj city cooperation, Faruk Hossain, 40, BNP’s publicity secretary of ward 2 under Narayanganj city cooperation and Nur Uddin, 42, a local BNP activist.

The arrestees were sent to jail as they couldn't be produced before a court on Friday, said Siddhirganj police OC Mashiur Rahman. "They'll be taken to court once again on Sunday."

Earlier on Tuesday, RAB 11 arrested Iqbal Hossain, 42, councillor of Ward No 2 under Narayanganj City Corporation, on charges of sabotage, attack on police, obstruction of government duty and terrorism during last week’s general strike observed by Hefazat-e-Islam in Narayanganj.

Police and RAB had filed seven cases in Rupganj and Siddhirganj police stations after the rampage during Hefazat’s hartal on March 28.

Later, two more cases were filed by AG Properties Developments Ltd of Dhaka’s Ahsan Group and Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation with Siddhirganj police.

In these nine cases, 166 people, including local BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami leaders, were named and at least 3,700 more unknown people accused.
