Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested the councillor of Ward No 2 under Narayanganj City Corporation for his ties to the violence that took place during last week’s general strike observed by Hefazat-e-Islam.
Iqbal Hossain, 42, who is also a local BNP leader, was picked up from his home in Mijmiji area under Siddhirganj around 1am Wednesday, confirmed RAB-11 Additional Superintendent of Police Md Jasim Uddin Chowdhury.
Jasim said Iqbal is accused in cases filed on sabotage, attack on police, obstruction of government duty and terrorism charges.
Legal procedures against Iqbal following his arrest are underway, he added.
Police and RAB had filed seven cases in Rupganj and Siddhirganj police stations after the rampage during Hefazat’s hartal on March 28.
Later, two more cases were filed by AG Properties Developments Ltd of Dhaka’s Ahsan Group and Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation with Siddhirganj police.
In these nine cases, 166 people, including local BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami leaders, were named and at least 3,700 more unknown people accused.
