Imam arrested for attempting to rape child in Jessore

Upon receiving the news of the incident, locals captured the imam and handed him over to police on Monday night

Police arrested an imam of a mosque for allegedly attempting to rape a 6-year-old girl in Keshabpur, Jessore on Monday.

The arrestee is Imran Hossain, 24, an imam of a local mosque.

The girl's father filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act with Keshabpur police station on Monday evening.

The imam was arrested on the same night and produced before the Jessore court on Tuesday morning, confirmed Keshabpur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC).

According to locals and police, Imran, son of Khorshed Ali of Bhabanipur area of the municipality, was the imam of the mosque adjacent to Madhyakul Government Primary School for about four years and taught Arabic language to the children.

On Monday, after teaching Arabic on the verandah of the mosque, he asked the survivor girl to stay with others.

Later, he was reportedly found alone, trying to rape her. The girl went home and informed her mother about the incident.

Locals then captured the imam and handed him over to the police on Monday night.
