India's Border Security Force (BSF) detained a Bangladesh national from the Padua border area in Gowainghat upazila, Sylhet on Sunday.

The detainee has been identified as Rubel Mia, 25, a resident of the upazila’s Pantamai village.

BGB 48 Battalion Commander Lt Col Ahmed Yusuf Jamil told Dhaka Tribune: “We have been informed that BSF has handed over the Bangladeshi to an Indian police station after detaining him.”

When asked why he was detained, the BGB official replied: “Rubel was detained after he illegally entered India’s Protapur area to buy rice at a cheap price.”

“We have repeatedly asked the locals not to cross the border like this but they still do it,” he said.

He added: “The local administration and public representatives along with BGB must work together to create awareness regarding this issue.”
