Awami League’s Rajshahi Metropolitan unit has filed an application seeking government approval to lodge a sedition case against four BNP leaders including Mizanur Rahman Minu, adviser to BNP chairperson, over threatening Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Mosabbirul Islam, law affairs secretary of the city Awami League, filed the application with the chief metropolitan court on Tuesday.

Advocate Aslam Sarkar, organizing secretary of city Awami League, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

The other three BNP leaders are BNP Organizing Secretary Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu, Rajshahi metropolitan BNP President Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul, and General Secretary Shafiqul Islam Milon.

According to the case petition, in a rally on March 2, BNP leader Minu publicly threatened Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during his speech.

He said if the prime minister remembers the assassination of her father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1975 and hinted "repeating 1975 assassination".

“BNP leader Ruhul Quddus Talukder and others made similar statements at the rally, creating hatred and threatening to overthrow the elected government led by Sheikh Hasina through illegal conspiracies,” the petition said.

The plaintiff, Mosabbirul said the application was filed under Section 123 (Ka)/124 (Ka)/34 of the Penal Code to take cognizance of the complaint filed against the four.

He said if the Home Ministry approves, then it will be recorded as a sedition case.

Meanwhile, Awami League leaders held a press conference on Tuesday morning in this regard.

AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, president and city mayor of Rajshahi Awami League, said the deputy commissioner sent the petition to the police commissioner for investigation. The investigation report will then go to the Home Ministry. The case will be recorded after getting approval from the ministry.

He said it would take two to three days to complete the process.

Following the rally on March 2, Rajshahi metropolitan Awami League protested Minu’s speech and gave him a 72-hour ultimatum to apologize last Wednesday.

On Sunday, Minu apologized by sending a statement to the media.

However, Awami League leaders filed the petition on Tuesday against the BNP leaders.
