Police have arrested a man for allegedly misappropriating money from job seekers, by impersonating an army major in Kurigram.
The accused, Maidul Islam, 26, hailing from the district’s Rajarhat upazila’s Gharial Danga union parishad, was arrested from his village home early on Friday, said Rajarhat police station OC Raju Sarker.
Police also recovered a fake ID card of Bangladesh Army and some documents, which he used to cheat people by promising jobs in the military and other organizations from Maidul’s possession.
“Introducing himself as a major, Maidul recently took Tk770,000 from a young man in Feni. The victim filed a case in this regard on September 30 last year, leading to the arrest early Friday,” OC Raju said.
Moreover, he embezzled money from many others in the same way by promising jobs in Bangladesh Army, Border Guard Bangladesh and some other public and private organizations, the police officer continued.
“Maidul used to impersonate officials of different ranks of the organizations concerned,” the OC said, adding that he was handed over to Feni police soon after arrest.
