Update : 17 Feb 2021, 08:15 PM

Sylhet mayor Ariful Haque Choudhury, officials, and employees of Sylhet City Corporation among 10 others were attacked during the eviction of illegal microbus and private car stands around 12:30PM on Wednesday in Chauhatta area of Sylhet city.

Police then brought the situation under control by firing 16 rounds of blank shots. One person, Faisal Ahmed Fahad has been arrested over the incident.

According to Sylhet City Corporation sources, the Chauhatta-Amberkhana road is being renovated where microbus and private car workers have been setting up illegal stands for a long time.

The workers had occupied most of the sidewalks and roads in the Chauhatta-Dargah area of this road. Hundreds of cars are parked here every day, blocking traffic movement.

Sylhet City Corporation evicted this illegal stand last Saturday. The campaign, led by the mayor, was opposed by transport workers. He later ordered them to leave the sidewalks and roads within three days.

A case will be filed soon against the workers on the charge of assaulting policemen.
