An Awami League activist has been shot to death in Pabna.

The incident occurred in the district’s Ataikanda Bazar at around 8:15pm on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Amirul Islam, 32, an activist of Bharara union parishad Awami League.

Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, Pabna Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Nasim Ahmed said: “Amirul and his associates were hanging out at the Ataikanda Bazar of Sadar upazila on Sunday night. At one point, a group of eight to 10 armed assailants arrived and shot Amirul.

“He died on the spot. We visited the crime scene after being informed about the incident. The area where the murder took place is remote and prone to criminal activity,” the OC added.

He further said the killers are yet to be identified.

According to locals, Amirul was a close associate to Sultan Mahmud, a leader of Bharara union parishad Awami League.

The deceased was shot thrice, they added.

He may have been killed by an opposition group who are aiming to establish supremacy in the local sand mining business, they said.

Locals also said that there is an ongoing dispute between Sultan and the local union parishad chairman.

When contacted, Bharara union parishad Awami League leader Sultan said: "Amirul had been doing politics with me for a long time. He was an innocent man. His son has been orphaned.

“Amirul’s murder is unacceptable,” he added.
