A massive fire has broken out at a chemical factory in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur.

The fire at the factory in Tepirbari village under Telihati union started around 4:45pm Thursday, said Sreepur Fire Service and Civil Defence Station Officer Mia Raja.

A loud explosion and a huge cloud of smoke belching out of the factory had triggered panic among the locals. They said window glasses of at least 50 buildings around the factory were shattered to pieces by the loud noise.

Although the fire was brought under control at around 7:30pm, eight firefighting units were still working around 10:30pm on to completely put out the flames due to the large amounts of chemicals stored in the building, Raja said.

He said the whole building was used for chemical production and storage.

The Fire Service officer said firefighters at the scene think the fire started from the stored hydrogen peroxide.

A total of 16 people were injured in the incident. Of them, Ishaq Hossainm, 45, sustained burn injuries.

Ishaq and five others were sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, while another one was sent to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) in Dhaka.

Nine others were receiving medical attention at the local Al Hera Hospital.

Meanwhile, one Jahangir Alam has claimed that his borther, named Parvez, who worked at the building has been missing since the fire started.

Locals alleged that they have been seeing toxic gas coming out with water from the deep tube wells for a while now. They suspect chemical production in that factory is the reason behind this.

However, the factory’s officials denied the allegations. Human Resources Officer Sohel Rana claimed the factory had been operating in line with the regulations set by the Department of Environment.
