'Multifabs boiler's validity expired last month'

A probe committee formed over Gazipur factory boiler blast have found that the validity of the boiler expired on June 24. Gazipur Additional Deputy Commissioner Rahenul Islam, who is heading the eight-member probe committee formed by the district administration, said while talking to reporters after an inspection inside the fire-ravaged factory around 11:30am on Tuesday. “We have found that the exploded boiler had expired on June 24 and it was not renewed. However, it cannot be confirmed yet if the explosion took place due to the boiler’s expiration,” he said. The Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) has formed another three-member probe body to investigate the incident. The death toll from the incident has already reached 11.

Over 50 people were injured in the boiler blast at Multifabs Limited, a four-storey apparel factory in Kashimpur’s Nayapara area, on Monday. The incident took place around 7:40pm when the employees were in its dying section on the ground floor. Fire engulfed the entire floor following the blast and later spread to the second floor of the building, leading to the causalities. On information, firefighters went to the scene and doused the blaze with the help of locals around 9pm. The authorities of Multifabs Limited have already announced to shut down the factory for an indefinite period. The authorities of 10 other apparel factory units in Nayapara area have also announced a holiday on Tuesday.

Mahiuddin Faruqui, chairman and managing Director of Multifabs Limited told Dhaka Tribune: "We'll definitely compensate and provide jobs for the family members of those who have been deceased and injured."

"We will give the highest possible amount as compensation. It will be fixed upon discussions with the district administration officials or the government," he added
