A Union Parishad (UP) chairman of Rangunia upazila of Chittagong has filed a case against a journalist under Section 57 of the ICT Act on Sunday night. Iqbal Hossen Chowdhury Milton – chairman of Islampur union and a follower of Awami League Publicity Affairs Secretary Hasan Mahmud – accused Toufikul Islam Babar, a staff reporter of Daily Samakal, of publishing false reports against Hasan Mahmud regarding the attack on BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

Rangunia Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Imtiaj Mohammed Ahsanul Kader Bhuiyan told the Dhaka Tribune that “In the case statement, the UP chairman alleged that the reporter had run false reports against the chairman, accusing him of being an aide to the attack on Mirza Fakhrul Islam. “After the reports were published on June 22 titled ‘Accused murderers are the cadre of Hasan Mahmud’ he became aggrieved and filed the case,” said the OC.

Mirza Fakhrul’s motorcade allegedly came under attack by the ruling party men in Isakhali Bazar in Rangunia on June 18 when the secretary general was visiting Rangamati to disburse relief among the landslide victims.
In the attack, Mirza Fakhrul and BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury were injured.
BNP leaders blamed Hasan Mahmud, the publicity affairs secretary of Awami League, for the attack.
