When questioned, the ruling party-backed mayor, too, was unable to shed light on why Saddam had attacked him.
At around 5pm on Sunday, Saddam had reportedly approached Mayor Sharfuddin at a furniture shop near the mayor's residence and had urged Sharfuddin to visit his ailing maternal uncle at the Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
When Sharfuddin refused, Saddam suddenly grabbed him by his shirt collar and proceeded to violently kick and punch him.
Witnesses to the event confirmed this and said they had rushed to restrain Saddam and had given him a thorough beating.
The police were then called in to detain the youth.
