Former BNP MP's house attacked, vandalized in Barisal

The situation was brought under control by the police

The home of former BNP MP Zahir Uddin Swapan was attacked and vandalized on Sunday. 

The situation was brought under control by the police, after they arrived at the spot. The attackers however fled the house.

Zahir Uddin Swapan spoke to the media saying that on Sunday morning, BNP mayoral nominee Hannan Sharif for Gournadi municipality along with other BNP leaders and activists of the area were greeting at Bhatikhana Road in Barisal.

“At around 2pm, a group of assailants launched a surprise attack on Zahir Uddin Swapan's residence and vandalized it.” Mayoral candidate Hannan Sharif alleged that about 10/12 people, including Hafizur Rahman, Russell Khandoker, Rukunuzzaman and Rajib Khan, were injured in the attack.

Meanwhile, former BNP MP Zahir Uddin Swapan also said: "I can't go to my mother's grave in my village for a long time due to Awami League's oppression."

Meanwhile, Barisal north district BNP president and former MP Mezba Uddin Farhad strongly condemned the attack, demanding legal action against those involved in the heinous incident.

When contacted, Barisal Metropolitan Police's Kaunia Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Sogir Ahmed said: "We sent our force after receiving the news of the attack. But the assailants left before that."

No one has been identified as the attacker and no one has lodged a complaint with the police so far, police said.
