A devastating fire that ripped through a factory manufacturing electronic goods in Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj, has been brought under control more than three hours after it broke out.
The fire started in the two-storey factory of Konka Electronics Limited located beside Dhaka-Chittagong highway in the Sadipur Tipurdi area around 10:30am on Sunday.
One of the workers was injured while escaping the fire, firefighters said.
Total 14 firefighting units – 12 from the Fire Service and Civil Defence and two from the Meghna Economic Zone – rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control around 1:45pm.
Speaking to Dhaka Tribune around 4pm on Sunday, Sujan Kumar Hawlader, station officer of Sonargaon Fire Station, said: “We are now dumping the burned waste from the factory.”
Contacted, Narayanganj Fire Service Deputy Director Abdullah Al Arefin, said that the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
The Fire Service official said there were flammable substances in the factory for which the fire spread around rapidly.
Arefin said: "We are investigating the matter of whether the fire was caused by a short circuit or chemicals."
A factory worker said they were working on the ground floor before the fire broke out. "When the flames started erupting with a loud bang on the first floor, we left the place immediately," he added.
Meanwhile, Narayanganj 3 MP Liyakot Hossain Khoka along with other officials of the local administration and law enforcement agencies have already visited the scene of the fire.
