12 killed in road accidents across Bangladesh

At least six people were injured in the incidents

t 12 people have died in road accidents across the country on Wednesday.

In Sylhet, four people were killed and three others injured when a gas cylinder inside a microbus exploded after it rammed into the back of a truck in Golapganj upazila.

The gas cylinder inside the microbus exploded on the Sylhet-Jakiganj Road in front of Mollagram Government Primary School in Golapganj upazila of Sylhet early in the day.

The deceased were identified as Rajon Ahmed, 27, son of Kunu Mia, Sunam Ahmed, 26, microbus driver and son of Abdul Jalil of Baroigram village of Bianibazar upazila, Hasan Ahmed, 8, son of Manju Mia of Rafipur village in Golapganj upazila while the identity of another victim could not be immediately known.

The explosion took place around 5:30am when the gas cylinder of the microbus exploded and caught fire after it crashed into the truck, leaving three passengers of the microbus dead on the spot and four others injured.

A child standing nearby suffered burn injuries during the incident, said Harunur Rashid Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Golapganj Police Station.

The injured were taken to a local hospital where the doctors declared the child dead.

On information, a team of police and local fire fighting units rushed to the spot and rescued the victims.

In Comilla, a couple and their daughter were killed when a freight train smashed into a CNG-run auto-rickshaw at Shasangachha rail crossing in Comilla in the morning, reports our correspondent.

The deceased were Farid Munsi, 70, his wife Peyara Begum, 55, and their daughter Akhi Akter, 16, all residents of Gazaria village in Debidwar upazila of the district.

Locals said the Dhaka-bound train coming from Chittagong rammed into the auto-rickshaw at the rail crossing near Comilla Railway Station around 6:45am, leaving the four injured, said the railway police outpost on-duty officer Md Ismail Hossain Siraji.

Injured Farid’s daughter Akhi Akter, 16, and nephew auto-rickshaw driver Rakibul, 30, were admitted to Comilla Medical College Hospital. Akhi died at the hospital.

Farid was declared dead around 8:30 am after he was taken to the hospital and his wife died around 10 am.

The rail crossing gateman Mizanur Rahman said the accident took place when the auto-rickshaw driver tried to cross the rail line ignoring his signal and the whistle of the train.

In Manikganj, three people were killed in separate road accidents in Manikganj Sadar upazila on Wednesday, said our Manikganj correspondent Motiur Rahman. 

The deceased were identified as Alam Mia, 40, and Siddiq, 40, residents of Gabtali area in Sadar upazila; Azizur Rahman, 46, hailed from Nagarpur upazila of Tangail district.

Sadar Police station officer in-charge (OC) Akbar Ali Khan said a pickup van carrying some construction workers turned turtle in Hujuli area this morning, leaving Alam and Siddiq dead on the spot.

Golra Highway Police Station officer in-charge (OC) Monirul Islam said motorcyclist Azizur was run over by an unknown vehicle in Manikganj Bus Stand area 1:30pm, leaving him dead on the spot.

In Chuadanga, one person has died and two were injured in a motorcycle accident that took place at 8:00am on Wednesday at Hatikata area of the district.

The deceased was identified as Sri Tapan Kumar Haldar, 40, who was a gold trader in Barabazar area.

According to police and witnesses, Tapan and Golam Mostafa were going on a motorcycle when they lost control of the motorcycle and hit Taijel who was on his cycle at Hatikata junction.

They fell on the road and a truck coming from the opposite direction ran over Tapan and Golam which injured them severely.

They were taken to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared Tapan dead and referred Golam Mostafa to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital as his condition was critical. Cyclist Taijel was also injured.

Chuadanga Sadar Police Station OC Abu Jihad Fakrul Alam Khan confirmed the incident and said the body had been handed over to the family members as no complaints were filed.

In Jhenaidah, a motorcyclist named Iqbal Hossain, 38, was killed when he was hit by a covered van in Barobazar area of Kaliganj upazila on Wednesday afternoon.

Barobazar Highway Police Sergeant Jahangir said a covered van carrying poultry was heading towards Jhenaidah from Jessore at noon and Iqbal was heading towards Jessore on a motorcycle. 

On reaching the spot of the incident, the covered van hit the motorcycle and fled. Iqbal fell on the side of the road and died on the spot.
