Deputy Secretary Nuruzzaman, the chief executive officer of Rajshahi Zila Parishad, has been arrested with contraband phensedyl in his possession.
The Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) detained him at the Mahananda Bridge Tolghar area of Chapainawabganj town on Friday at around 9:30pm.
Chapainawabganj Sadar police station OC Mozaffar Hossain said the high ranking government official was produced in court and subsequently sent to jail, after he was shown arrested in a case filed by Chapainawabganj DNC Inspector Saifur Rahman on Saturday.
Zafarullah Kajal, additional director of Rajshahi divisional DNC, said another detainee, identified as Sajid, from Biswanathpur area in Kansat union of Shibganj upazila, was also apprehended along with Nuruzzaman.
"Drives were conducted at the Tolghar area as part of our anti-narcotics drive. We found five bottles of phensedyl from a jeep of the zila parishad," said local DNC Inspector Saifur Rahman to journalists.
"The detainees were taken to the Chapainawabganj circuit house, where they were identified. Necessary action will be taken against them," Saifur added.
The detained Deputy Secretary Nuruzzaman was brought before the journalists when Inspector Saifur disclosed the matter.
