Freedom Fighter Altaf Haider, who first raised independent Bangladesh’s flag in Patuakhali, has died due to old age complications. He was 83.

He passed away around 9:45pm on Tuesday at his residence in Deulia village in the district's Mirzaganj upazila.

His death came just the night before the nation’s 50th Victory Day.

He left behind his wife, six daughters, two sons, and a host of relatives to mourn his death.

Freedom Fighter Altaf will be laid to rest at his family graveyard after Zuhr prayer following a Namaz-e-Janaza.

On December 8, 1971, Altaf hoisted the flag at Shaheed Alauddin Shishu Park in Patuakhali district town.

The nation is celebrating the 50th Victory Day with elaborate programs, paying deep homage to the martyrs who laid down their lives for the country during the Liberation War.

Bangladesh was born as an independent country on this day in 1971 after the Pakistani occupation forces surrendered following a bloody nine-month war in which millions of lives were lost and hundreds of thousands of women were dishonoured.

Along with the government, different socio-political, educational, and cultural institutions and organisations have chalked out a series of programs to celebrate the day. Bangladeshis at home and abroad will celebrate the day.
