A Khulna court on Monday sentenced a teenage boy to life imprisonment for killing a 16-year old schoolgirl, who was murdered for refusing a relationship proposal.
The court also slapped the convict Rony Hawlader with a Tk20,000 fine, in default a year in prison, said Public Prosecutor Enamul Haque.
The trials of the prime accused in the case, Jashim, has been ongoing at the Juvenile Court, Enamul added.
Khulna District and Session court Judge Moshiur Rahman Chowdhury handed down the verdict, stating that despite evidence obtained could get Rony a death sentence, he was awarded life term considering age.
According to the case statement, the victim, 16-year old Shimla, was a ninth-grader at Kajdia High School in 2016, when, one, Jashim proposed to her for a romantic relationship.
After Shimla refused the offer, Jashim along with his associate Rony attacked her with sharp weapons. Jashim dumped the knife used in the attack in a pond, while the Hasua (chopping tool) used in the incident was kept at his home.
After the attack, Shimla was taken to Rupsha Upazila Health Complex where the duty-doctor declared her dead.
On August 30, 2017, Inspector Golam Ruhul Kuddus, the case Investigating Officer (IO), submitted a charge-sheet to the court which recorded the testimonies of 23 people before reaching Monday’s verdict.
