Bir Shreshtho Jahangir's 49th martyrdom anniversary today

Milad mahfil, prayers, and ziarat of his grave is set to be held on the courtyard of the historic Sona Masjid

Today is the 49th anniversary of the martyrdom of Bir Shreshtho Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir, one of the seven greatest heroes recognized for their valour during the War of Liberation in 1971.

On this day of December 14 in 1971, Jahangir went ahead of the defence line into a trench of Pakistan army at Rehaichar village in Chapainawabganj Sadar, when an enemy bullet hit him on the forehead killing him on the spot.

On the next day, he was buried on the premises of historic Sona Masjid in Shibganj upazila as per his last wish, beside valiant freedom fighter Major Nazmul Haque.

To recover his body earlier in the day, another valiant freedom fighter Yakub sacrificed his life, just a day before the nation's victory against Pakistani forces.

Born on March 6 in 1945, at Rahimganj village under Babuganj upazila in Barisal, Jahangir joined as a cadet at Pakistan Military Academy in 1967. He was later commissioned in the Corps of Engineers.

While stationed at Karakoram in West Pakistan, Jahangir took leave on June 10 in 1971, managed to cross the Indian border and met Bangladesh freedom fighters in Maldah district of West Bengal.

Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Chapainawabganj district unit, with the aid of local administration, observed the day by hoisting the national flag and placing wreaths at Jahangir’s grave and the memorial built in his honour at Rehaichar.

Munajat (prayer), discussion programs, and paying due respect to the martyrs of the War of Liberation is set to be held in the courtyard of Sona Masjid and eternal peace for the departed souls will sought.
