Police and Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested 4 more people during separate raids on Friday and Saturday in three cases filed over a mob lynching incident in Burimari union of Lalmonirhat's Patgram upazila over rumors of a desecration of the Quran.
The arrestees were identified as Motahar Hossain, 21, Amir Hossain, 30, Atiar Rahman Paiya, 35 and Biplob Hossain alias Limon, 19.
Speaking to Dhaka Tribune, Patgram police station Officer in Charge (OC) Sumon Kumar Mohant said that police along with DB conducted several raids on Friday and Saturday and arrested the accused from different areas of the district.
The arrestees were later produced in court on Saturday afternoon, which sent them to jail after denying three-day remand plea of police. Hearing on the matter will be held tomorrow, the OC added.
With these fresh arrests, a total of 44 people have been arrested in the three cases so far.
On October 29, Abu Yunus Md Shahidunnabi Jewel, 50, was beaten to death by an angry mob on the Burimari Union Parishad premises in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat.
The mob then took his body some 300 metres away to the Prothom Bashkol area on Lalmonirhat-Burimari highway and set it on fire, fuelled with dried materials, tyres and petrol.
Later, the deceased Abu Younus Muhammad Shahidunnabi Jewel's cousin Saiful Alam filed a murder case mentioning the names of 100 people and a hundred unnamed with the police station, while Assistant Sub Inspector Shahjahan Ali of Patgram Police Station filed a case naming 50 persons and a hundred unknown for putting up impediments to government work.
The other case, filed by Abu Sayed Nawaz Nishat, chairman of Burimari Union Parishad, mentioned the names of 50 people and another hundred unnamed for vandalising and setting fire to the union parishad office with the same police station.
