Patuakhali district’s coastal upazila Rangabali will be brought under electricity coverage by the Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB).
The off-grid upazila island in the Bay of Bengal will get power following BREB’s 100% electricity coverage program commemorating Mujib Year 2020, said a press release issued in this regard on Monday.
The rural electrification board has completed 100% electrification in 461 upazilas under 80 Palli Bidyut Samities, said the release, adding that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had already inaugurated 100% electricity coverage in 288 upazilas while 173 upazilas were awaiting inauguration.
With a view to providing power to every household of Bangladesh under the 100% electricity coverage program marking the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, BREB is working relentlessly, said the release.
Electricity facilities in the remote villages – altogether 1,059 of them – of the upazila will be completed in three phases within Mujib Year (December 2020).
Around 1.55 lakh users in total 646 villages – which are more accessible – are getting electricity under Phase 1. Under Phase 2, some 90,000 users in 384 remote areas will get electricity facilities by November.
Electricity will be supplied to around 2.5 lakh families in the 1,030 villages under the first two phases by laying submarine cables drawn under the riverbeds.
Around 6,000 users in another 29 remote villages of the upazila will get power through using Solar Home Systems (SHS) under Phase 3 of the initiative.
To transform the country into “Sonar Bangla” as envisaged by the Father of the Nation, “Ghore Ghore Bidyut” program was taken up to expand rural electrification.
Despite many constraints, it has become possible to extend power coverage because of the directives and constant support from the prime minister, BREB said.
The electrification board invited educational institutions, district-upazila level public and private offices, and village residents to apply for electricity.
To get the connection, consumers are requested to contact Palli Bidyut directly and pay the fixed fees.
According to BREB, “Durjog e Alor Guerilla” team is working tirelessly to ensure electricity for around 30 million people from all walks of life.
