A woman and her three-year-old son were run over and killed by a bus on their way to a hospital in Kaliganj upazila of Lalmonirhat.

The accident took place when a bus hit a three-wheeler carrying eight people, who were on their way to visit their neighbour and her newborn baby at the Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex Thursday morning.

The deceased were identified as Manjila Begum, 32, wife of Md Badiuzzaman and their son Md Saju, 3, of Shoulmari village in the upazila, said Md Sazzad Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kaliganj police station.

He said: “A bus rammed into a three-wheeler causing a woman and her son to fall off onto the road. The bus then ran them over while fleeing the scene. The incident occurred on the Burimari Highway at Chowdhury intersection around 11:30am.”

They were initially taken to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex. But when their condition deteriorated further, the woman and her son were shifted to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries.

Police handed the bodies over to the victims’ family members without autopsy at their request. “No case has been filed with the police station in this regard,” added the police OC.

Road accidents in Bangladesh are still a major reason behind many deaths, injuries and huge property damage every year.

At least 7,855 people were killed and 13,330 others injured in 5,516 road crashes across the country last year, according to Jatri Kalyan Samity, a platform working for the welfare of passengers.
