Lalmonirhat Lynching: 1 more accused held

Jewel was beaten to death at the Burimari Bazar Central Jame Mosque in Patgram upazila for allegedly insulting the Quran

Police along with Detective Branch (DB) have arrested another accused in the case over the murder of Shahidunnabi Jewel, who was beaten to death by an agitated mob in Lalmonirhat's Patgram.

The arrestee identified as GM Manik, 45, was apprehended on Sunday, confirmed Suman Kumar Mohonto, officer-in-charge of Patgram police station.

Meanwhile, another individual named Abdur Razzaque Babla, 26, was arrested by the same team on the same day on charges of vandalism, obstruction of government work, and attack on police.

Lalmonirhat DB Inspector Md Mahmudunnabi, also the investigation officer of the case, said: "Both the accused were taken to the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Court Judge Ferdousi Begum on Monday noon. We sought a three-day remand for quizzing GM Manik.

"The court has scheduled Wednesday for a hearing on our remand plea. It also denied bail to both of the accused and ordered them to be sent to jail.

"The remand hearing of Abu Kalam alias Gamcha Kalam -- the 44th accused in the Jewel murder case -- will also be held on the same day,” he added.

On October 29, Jewel was beaten to death at the Burimari Bazar Central Jame Mosque in Patgram upazila for allegedly insulting the Quran. His body was later burnt.

Jewel was the son of Abdul Wazed Mia of Shalban Rokeya Sarani area in Rangpur. He was a former librarian of Rangpur Cantonment Public School and College.
