Police along with Detective Branch (DB) have arrested another accused in the case over the murder of Shahidunnabi Jewel, who was beaten to death by an agitated mob in Lalmonirhat's Patgram.
Accused Abu Kalam alias Gamcha Kalam was arrested from the Bamondal border area on Saturday, confirmed Suman Kumar Mohonto, officer-in-charge of Patgram police station.
“Kalam is the 44th accused in the Jewel murder case and has been shown arrested in one more related case. We have asked the court for a remand order, which will be declared on Wednesday.”
A Lalmonirhat court on November 16 granted a five-day remand for another accused, Helal Uddin, 30.
Helal is the 33th accused in Jewel murder case and 36th accused in a case filed for assaulting police and obstructing government work linked to Jewel's murder.
On October 29, Jewel was beaten to death at the Burimari Bazar Central Jame Mosque in Patgram Upazila for allegedly insulting the Qur’an. His body was later burnt.
Jewel was the son of Abdul Wazed Mia of Shalban Rokeya Sarani area in Rangpur. He was a former librarian of Rangpur Cantonment Public School and College.
