A two-days-old baby girl, who was abandoned by her mother in a jungle just a day after her birth, has died after being rescued from Khalpar area near Farazikanda Jame Mosque area of Narayanganj.
“Rikta Begum, 30, mother of the baby girl, was arrested on Friday night after the girl’s father filed a case in this regard,” Narayanganj Bandar police station Sub-Inspector Md Ziaur Rahman said while confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Saturday.
The baby girl, who was born on Friday morning, was rescued by locals just two hours after she was abandoned by her mother in the jungle.
The girl’s father, Lal Mia, works at a flour mill, and Rikta works at a garments factory in the Bandar area. The couple has a seven-year-old son.
According to police, Rikta dumped her newborn in the jungle near their house just hours after giving birth because it was a girl child.
However, a local youth rescued the baby wrapped in a cloth after hearing cries from the jungle. He later handed over the child to Narayanganj Bandar police.
The child was first taken to a local hospital for treatment but was later shifted to Dhaka Medical College as her condition deteriorated. The baby died while receiving treatment.
“After locating the parents of the rescued child, Rikta confessed to dumping the newborn in a nearby jungle,” Sub-Inspector Md Ziaur Rahman said.
Talking to Dhaka Tribune, Narayanganj Bandar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Fakhruddin Bhuiyan said an investigation is being conducted to find out the real reason for the woman’s actions.
He also confirmed that the accused has been placed before the court in this regard.
