Case filed over attack on Fakhrul’s motorcade

A case has been filed over the attack on BNP leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s motorcade in Chittagong’s Rangunia upazila. Advocate Enamul Haque, joint convener of Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum, filed the case with Chittagong Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate ASM Shahidulla’s court on Wednesday morning. The court kept the order pending. Twenty-six people were named while 25 to 30 others were unnamed in the case.

The plaintiff of the case said that all the attackers are residents of Rangunia upazila and all of them are involved with the politics of the ruling party. A motorcade carrying a BNP delegation comprising the party's Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir came under an attack at Shantirhat of Rangunia upazila of Chittagong on June 18.
Adviser Major General (Retd) Ruhul Alam Chowdhury and the party’s Chittagong divisional unit Organising Secretary Mahbuber Rahman Shamim were injured during the attack. Fakhrul termed the incident an attack on the people who think freely and oppose the government.

Blaming the ruling party for the attack, he said: “This is not a personal attack but an attack on democracy. It is an attack on freethinkers and also on those who oppose the government.” BNP in an immediate reaction to the incident demonstrated in front of local BNP office in Ragngunia and also in front of its Nayapaltan headquarters.
