Lalmonirhat Lynching: Another accused placed on 5-day remand

The accused Helal Uddin, 30, son of Mofiz Uddin is the 33th accused in Jewel murder case

A Lalmonirhat court on Monday granted a five-day remand for another accused in the murder case of Shahidunnabi Jewel, who was beaten to death by an agitated mob in Lalmonirhat's Patgram.

The accused Helal Uddin, 30, son of Mofiz Uddin is the 33th accused in Jewel murder case and 36th accused in a case filed over assault on police and obstructing government works -- linked to Jewel's murder.

Musa Alam, an inspector of Lalmonirhat court police confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune.

Lalmonirhat Senior Judicial Magistrate court Judge Ferdousi Begum placed Helal on remand after the  Detective Branch (DB) of police, in-charge of investigating the case, produced him before the court on Monday.

On Saturday, police arrested Helal from his own house in Ufarmara area of Burimari union in Patgram upazila, said Lalmonirhat District Detective Branch (DB) Police OC Omar Farooq.

Earlier on Sunday, the same court placed Muezzin Afiz Uddin on a five-day remand. So far 34 people have been arrested in three separate cases.

On Saturday, Abul Hossain, the main accused in the murder case of Shahidunnabi Jewel testified at court.

On October 29,  Jewel was beaten to death at the Burimari Bazar Central Jame Mosque in Patgram Upazila for allegedly insulting the Qur’an. His body was later burnt.

Jewel, son of Abdul Wazed Mia of Shalban Rokeya Sarani area in Rangpur. He was a former librarian of Rangpur Cantonment Public School and College.
