An activist of the Awami Jubo League has been hacked to death in broad daylight in Comilla city.

The deceased Zillur Rahman 48, was a resident of the municipality’s ward 25. Zillur was also a vying candidate for the post of vice-president for the same ward’s Jubo League unit and he previously ran for the post of councillor from the same ward back in 2017.

According to police and witnesses, the incident took place in front of Dhanpur Fonka Brick Field Wednesday morning, when 10-15 men riding on motorcycles obstructed Zillur on his path and attacked him with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured.

Sadar Dakshin Model police station Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) Kamal Krishna Dhar confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

Following the attack, Zillur’s wife rescued him to Comilla Medical College Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Speaking to journalists at the hospital, Additional Superintendent of Police Azim-ul-Ahsan said: “We are talking to the victim's family and eyewitnesses and trying to ascertain the people involved in the killing.”

Police say the reason behind the killing could not be known immediately while multiple local sources claimed Zillur was killed over previous enmity centring regional politics.

The victim's family is preparing to file a case, added the police official.
