Brahmanbaria man beaten dead by rivals

Several others including the victim’s brother were injured while trying to save the young man

A young man was beaten to death by his rivals reportedly over a trivial matter in Nasirnagar upazila of Brahmanbaria.

The deceased was identified as Syed Munabbir Ahmed Tanan, 25, an aspiring poet and prominent cultural activist in the region. He was also a postgrad student at Brahmanbaria Government College. 

According to the victim’s family, the incident took place Monday, when one Osman Miah, his accomplice Mojnu Miah and 10-15 other unidentified men came down on Tanan over a dispute regarding the obstruction of water flow in a local government canal. 

Several people including the victim’s brother were injured trying to save the young man.

Locals initially rescued the critically injured Tanan, along with his brother Tonmoy and several others to the Nasirnagar Upazila  Health Complex.

As Tanan’s health condition further deteriorated he was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. However, he died en-route in the early hours of Tuesday.

Confirming the incident, Ariful Haque, officer-in-charge of Nasirnagar police station said: “We are trying to arrest the perpetrators. A case will soon be filed over the murder.”
